Motiva Turns to Elliott to Redesign Turbine Blades

Jeannette, PA, May 8, 2008

Third-party blade design causes 10th stage failure

Motiva has awarded a contract to Elliott to redesign the blades on a pair of Elliott steam turbines at its Port Arthur, Texas refinery. The turbines were originally installed 50 years ago to drive the wet gas and air compressors for the cat cracker. The new Elliott blades will replace third party blades that had failed.

“Motiva’s blade failures resulted from a problem in the design of the third-party blades,” said Dan Renard, Market Manager for Rerate Services. ”Elliott proposed a different blade design that will not only restore, but ultimately improve Motiva’s process.”

Along with the blades, the contract includes new disk assemblies and diaphragms for the two duplicate rotors and a spare. The job will be completed in Elliott’s Houston service shop, where work on the spare rotor is underway. Delivery for the first rotor is scheduled for early summer, 2008, with the other two to follow.
